New York, USA – Oman has urged all United Nations member states to support a draft resolution calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months.
The General Assembly was scheduled to vote on the resolution on Wednesday, which is part of a Palestinian push for international support.
The non-binding resolution, based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), states that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land since 1967 is ‘unlawful’. Israel has opposed the resolution, arguing that its adoption could lead to further violence.
Oman praised the ICJ’s advisory opinion, issued on July 19, which highlighted the legal consequences of Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The sultanate said this opinion reflects the international community’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.
Oman called on Israel to end its ‘illegal presence’ and compensate the Palestinian people for the damages caused by its policies.
Speaking at the tenth emergency special session of the UN General Assembly, Counselor Khalid bin Saleh al Rabkhi, Oman’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said the advisory opinion represents a significant step in supporting Palestinian rights.
He urged the international community to take collective responsibility to ensure the opinion is implemented and to work towards ending the occupation. Oman also expressed deep concern over the ongoing blockade and military operations in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to the siege and the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid.
Oman called on UN member states to support the draft resolution.
