Muscat – Oman and South Korea are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2024 with a series of celebratory events and programmes – panning business, sports, and cultural exchanges.
The year-long festivities started in May with the launch of a commemorative logo, followed by a reception honouring the National Youth Taekwondo Team medal winners at the GCC Youth Games. A notable Korea-Oman Green Industry Business meet was also held in September, underscoring both nations’ commitment to sustainable development.
Forthcoming events include a music performance by ADG7, a Korean fusion traditional music group, set to perform at Al Bustan Palace on September 25.
Additionally, the Korean Ambassador’s Cup will take place at the Sultan Qaboos Complex, with the Korea-Oman Business Forum rounding off the year in December.
Speaking about the events, H E Kiejoo Kim, Ambassador of South Korea to Oman, praised the longstanding relations between the two nations. He said, “Korea is proud to be Oman’s third-largest trading partner.”
He highlighted that recent agreements, such as the free trade agreement between South Korea and the GCC countries and the bilateral trade and investment promotion framework, will further bolster economic ties.
H E Kim also stressed the importance of Oman Vision 2040, emphasising future-oriented partnerships in renewable energy and environmental technology.
On the cultural front, H E Kim added that the embassy plans to bring back the popular film festival in Oman. “Films from South Korea are very popular in Oman and films like Parasite and the Netflix series The Squid Game has been trending for long. We will plan to get back these classic from next year.”
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1974, Oman and Korea have maintained strong cooperation, marked by mutual respect and growing collaboration across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
