Muscat – Oman reaffirmed its strong support for the Palestinian cause during the 62nd session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) being held in Bangkok, Thailand from September 8 to 13.
Represented by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, the sultanate emphasised the need for international efforts to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Leading Oman’s delegation, H E Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Saidi, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, expressed Oman’s “full support for the efforts of AALCO” and highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinians in Gaza. He described the situation as a result of “brutal Israeli aggression” that disregards international law and humanitarian principles.
In his address, H E Saidi urged the global community to “fulfil its humanitarian duty” to stop the violence, starvation and displacement of Palestinians. He called for an immediate end to the dangerous escalation in the occupied territories and stressed the need for civilians to live in peace and security on their own land. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring unhindered access to essential humanitarian aid, including food, water and medicine.
“Oman remains committed to its firm position on supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people,” H E Saidi said, calling for a “just, comprehensive and lasting peace” in the region. He also called for international law and conventions to be upheld, condemning the ongoing attacks by Israeli forces on Palestinian civilians.
The AALCO meeting addressed several other global issues, including international trade and investment law, cyber law, and environmental sustainability. The discussions included a report on topics set to be covered by the United Nations International Law Commission at its 75th meeting.
Oman’s participation in the AALCO meeting highlights its active role in international legal discussions and its unwavering support for the Palestinian people amidst the ongoing conflict.
