Organ donation – Gift of life

8 Sep 2024 Organ donation - Gift of life By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Ministry of Health has announced that it is gearing up to launch a heart transplantation programme. In the buildup to the programme, what should be done to encourage more people to donate organs? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Ali al Harthy, Businessman

Education is key to encouraging organ donation. The Ministry of Health should initiate awareness campaigns in schools, colleges and workplaces to inform people about the life-saving potential of organ donation. We need to debunk  myths and foster a culture of giving. Religious leaders can also play a crucial role in educating communities about the importance of donating organs as an act of charity and compassion. Social organisations of expatriate communities must also be engaged.

One of the best ways to encourage organ donation is by integrating it into the Omani culture. The Ministry of Health could organise community events and seminars where medical professionals as well as religious leaders explain the process and benefits of organ donation. Engaging social influencers and public figures to advocate for this cause can also help normalise the conversation around organ donation.

Salman Khan, Salesman

The Ministry of Health should focus on creating a strong legal framework that protects both donors and recipients. Clear transparent procedures will build trust in the public. Additionally, offering incentives, such as recognition certificates or financial help for families of donors, can encourage more people to participate. It’s essential to make people believe that organ donation is a noble act that can save lives.

Fatima al Lawati, Homemaker

To encourage organ donation, the Ministry of Health should collaborate with media outlets to share stories of successful transplants and the impact on recipients’ lives. Seeing real-life examples can inspire more people to register as donors. Also the registration process must be made easy and accessible.

Santosh Kumar, Businessman

This is one of the best acts of kindness and humanity. It must be encouraged and appreciated. I feel that there must be separate kiosks to encourage people who visit hospitals. Such kiosks must be put up at public events like Muscat Nights and football matches. Also the language must be easy and include languages other than Arabic and English.
