Muscat – In a step towards self-sufficiency, Salem bin Saeed al Azizi from Dhank, Dhahirah has grown over four tonnes of guava.
Known for its versatility, the fruit is enjoyed fresh or processed into beverages, jams and other foods. Additionally, guava leaves and the fruit itself are used in traditional medicine for stomach and intestinal conditions, pain, diabetes and healing wound.
In 2020, Azizi realised a dream by planting 100 guava trees of Indian, Omani and Egyptian varieties in his farm in the Al Azizi area of Dhank.
He chose these varieties based on recommendations of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources due to their compatibility with local climate. Four years later, the trees bore fruit.
Azizi informed that his goal is to help achieve local self-sufficiency and reduce imports. “Guava is a distinctive and sought-after fruit. Our harvest period extended from February to July; each tree produced approximately 45kg of fruit. This year, our total production reached 4.5 tonnes.”
The demand for guava is high, leading to quick sales in local markets and neighbouring areas. Families often visit the farm to pick their own fruit, sharing their experiences on social media, which boosts customer interest – a phenomenon known as agricultural tourism.
Azizi succeeded despite challenges, including extreme temperatures reaching 50°C and issues with fruit flies. He managed these by using fertilisers, modern technologies and with the support of the technical team of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources in Dhank.
Looking ahead, Azizi is eager to expand both cultivation and production of guava. Besides plans to increase the area of cultivation, he is eager to broaden the marketing and distribution network to reach more local markets.
Oman is largely dependent on imports for local fruit demand, with 174.42mn kg of fruits, valued at RO67.69mn, brought in to the country till May 2024. Egypt, India and the UAE are the top sources of imported fruits.
