Muscat – Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals announced on Saturday the plan to develop a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) train at the Qalhat Industrial Complex in Sur.
The new liquefaction train, with an annual production capacity of 3.8mn metric tonnes, will raise Oman’s LNG production capacity to 15.2mn metric tonnes per year, according to an Oman News Agency report.
The new train will improve operational efficiency and maximise the benefit from the existing infrastructure of Oman LNG Company. The construction of the new train is expected to be completed and operational by 2029, according to the Oman News Agency report.
The new liquefaction train is expected to enhance annual LNG production and its derivatives, enabling optimal utilisation of available reserves.
As per the report, the government will proceed with completing the initial engineering design study for the new LNG train project. This step is expected to pave the way for making the final investment decision for the project, which is driven by the growing global demand for clean energy and is part of Oman’s commitment to energy security.
H E Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, said, “The plan to launch a new train represents a pivotal addition to the strategy adopted by the sultanate to sustain its position as an important supplier and a major, safe, and reliable source of energy globally.”
H E Aufi pointed out that the Ministry of Energy and Minerals is working to support infrastructure and available resources to respond to the increasing demand for clean energy sources, contributing to diversifying sources of support for the national economy and ensuring its sustainability in the long term.
He explained that the new LNG train project will be built alongside the current trains at the Qalhat LNG Complex, which will enhance the ability to meet the increasing demand for LNG in the global market.
