Campaign launched to combat invasive Parthenium plant in Dhofar

3 Jul 2024 Campaign launched to eradicate Parthenium in Dhofar

Salalah – Dhofar Municipality has launched a campaign aimed at eradicating the Parthenium plant by planting seeds of 2mn indigenous flora across various wilayats in the governorate. This initiative, which began on Wednesday, underscores the municipality’s commitment to combatting the spread of the Parthenium plant in the governorate.

The effort reflects a proactive approach by Dhofar Municipality to safeguard biodiversity and mitigate the ecological impact of invasive species, thereby fostering sustainable development in the governorate.

Regarded as one of the most invasive weeds, Parthenium has infested parts of Dhofar’s plains and farmlands. The noxious plant releases chemicals that inhibit the growth of crops and pasture plants, while its allergenic properties pose a risk to both humans and livestock, often triggering pollen allergies.

According to a statement from Dhofar Municipality, the first phase of the campaign focuses on planting 2mn wild plants to address the issue of Parthenium in the governorate. The overarching goals include enriching ecosystems with indigenous flora, combating the invasion of harmful species, preventing desertification, and promoting cultural awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats.

Specifically, the campaign will involve planting wild plants like sidr and tabaldi in several locations including Mirbat, Salalah, Taqah, Rakhiout and Dalkout.
