11 Jun 2024 Industrial facility fires rise 10% in 2023; CDAA calls for caution

Muscat – The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) has released data showing that 45 industrial fire incidents were reported in 2023, up 10% from 41 in 2022.

In a statement, the CDAA said that it has issued a report highlighting a surge in fire incidents at industrial facilities during the summer months, attributed to high temperatures.

According to the authority, these fires stem from various causes, with some industrial facilities failing to adhere to civil protection requirements, consequently leading to outbreaks of fires that result in significant property damage and both human and material losses.

In response to this alarming trend, the authority underscored the imperative of strict adherence to the guidelines established by the CDAA’s General Administration of Civil Protection to mitigate the risk of fires in industrial settings.

These guidelines include regular maintenance of alarm and firefighting systems, adherence to safety protocols during storage procedures, and addressing other potential hazards that jeopardize the safety of facilities, their personnel, and visitors. Furthermore, facilities are urged to develop and implement emergency plans, alongside comprehensive training programs to equip workers with the necessary skills to execute them effectively.

By prioritising preventive measures and fostering a culture of safety and preparedness, industrial facilities can significantly reduce the likelihood of fire incidents, safeguarding both lives and assets.
