Muscat – Ministry of Health (MoH) inaugurated a factory of Menagen Pharmaceutical Industries in Rusayl Industrial Area on Monday. The RO20mn project aims to enhance drug security in the sultanate.

Spread over 12,000sqm, the plant is set to MoH, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) specifications. It is the first facility of its kind in the Middle East specialising in the production of biosimilar medicines and treatments for rare diseases.

The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Dr Hilal Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health, in the presence of several other ministers and senior officials.

On the occasion, Dr Khalfan bin Saif al Hosni, Chairman of Board of Directors of Menagen Pharmaceutical Industries, said the factory aims to localise the manufacture of medicines in the Middle East and North Africa. “The factory’s establishment is the culmination of tireless efforts, continuous work and meticulous planning. What started as a mere idea has now materialised into a significant reality with a clear vision and mission.”

According to Hamad bin Saif al Hasani, Member of Board of Directors of the company, the factory will revolutionise the pharmaceutical industry in the region by providing innovative and life-saving medicines.

He informed that the total project cost is expected to exceed RO30mn in future phases. The name Menagen combines ‘Mena’ – the region – with ‘gen’, reflecting the company’s commitment to gene technology and biomedical innovation.

Hasani outlined several objectives of the factory, including enhancing drug security, boosting the national economy, creating job opportunities, fostering human capital development, and establishing a leading centre for scientific research, innovation and advanced technology transfer. “The factory aims to attract skilled professionals, innovative ideas and competencies.”

Additionally, the company is working on several projects set to launch soon, including a pioneering one in cell and gene therapy – the first of its kind in the region. Another project – Ezz Pharmaceutical Industries specialising in intravenous solutions and other medications – is set to open in the last quarter of 2024 in Nizwa.
