Muscat –  Oman, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), will be hosting a regional meeting of the UN Tourism beginning in Muscat on Wednesday.

The three-day long meeting of the 50th UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Middle East will see the organisation of the conference on ‘Investing in Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges in Sustainable Financing’.

The opening ceremony will be held under the patronage of H H Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Oman. 

H E Salim Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, said that the hosting of this meeting and conference is a great opportunity to showcase the tourism assets and products of Oman. 

“It underscores the significant position of the Omani tourism sector within the Middle East and globally, as Oman has emerged as a promising destination due to its diverse tourism offerings.”

H E Mahrouqi told ONA that the event will not only promote Oman as a key venue for international meetings and conferences but will also highlight its continuous efforts in tourism development. 

Additionally, the conference will facilitate the exchange of experiences and knowledge in the field.

The minister explained that the meeting aims to reaffirm the commitment to enhancing the potential of the tourism sector in the region. It will review the plans and strategies of the UN Tourism, along with some upcoming projects. 

The discussions will focus on aligning with the global tourism trends that prioritise the preservation of natural resources and the reinforcement of Omani culture and heritage.

It will offer an opportunity to strengthen the relationship of Oman’s tourism sector with its regional counterparts.

Regarding the conference, H E Mahrouqi noted that it will address the sustainable financing of the tourism sector, discussing related challenges and opportunities. 

“The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of directing funding towards tourism projects that support economic and social growth in sustainable ways,” he underlined.
