DBBS warns against social media blood appeals

21 May 2024 DBBS warns against social media blood appeals

Muscat – The Department of Blood Bank Services (DBBS) has issued a public notice regarding the circulation of social media posts requesting blood donations.

In a statement issued by DBBS said, ‘Referring to the messages circulating on social media about the need for A+ blood type in the Royal Hospital, DBBS emphasised that blood requests should not be published on social media. The stock of most blood types in the Central Blood Bank is currently stable, with the exception of type O.’

Families of patients are urged to first consult blood banks before resorting to online pleas. The blood bank can fulfill requirements either from existing stocks or by coordinating with donors, including through social media appeals, it added.
