Muscat – Omani short film Ta, directed by Mohammed al Darushi, has won the Best Short Film in Animation award at The Digital Gate International Film Festival in Algeria.

This is the second accolade for the film, which also received recognition in Oman last year.

Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two-minute silent film addresses child safety and kidnapping. It was shot in Amerat and Muttrah and features five characters navigating complex situations.

Reflecting on the film’s creation, Darushi said, “It took long because I was not used to animation and have been involved in making documentaries. It has been a unique project as I shot and did hand painting, and finally, in After Effects, did animation. That is the reason why we took a long time. I wanted to make something different.”

The film employs a blend of traditional and digital animation techniques using Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Vegas, and Moho. Darushi sought to push storytelling boundaries, creating a narrative that resonates deeply with audiences.

“The recognition garnered by Ta at the Algeria film festival is a testament to the burgeoning talent and creativity within Oman’s film industry,” Darushi said.

“The film stands as a shining example of the power of storytelling to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and spark meaningful dialogue on issues of social relevance.”
