18 May 2024 Oman to host UN Tourism regional meet

Muscat – Oman, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will be hosting the 50th UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Middle East from May 22 to May 24.

The meeting will also see the organisation of the conference on ‘Investing in Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges in Sustainable Financing’.

The opening ceremony will be held under the patronage of H H Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Oman. Hosting of the meeting by Oman is of great importance, according to MHT, for highlighting the tourism sector and its cultural components, as well as strengthening relations with its counterparts in the region.

The conference, accompanying the meeting, represents an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to financing in the tourism sector in a sustainable manner.

According to UN Tourism, in 2023, the Middle East was only region to surpass the pre-pandemic levels with arrivals 122% above 2019 levels, reaching 87.1mn international tourists.

With the strong forecast growth in global tourism to 2030, significant investment will be required to provide the accommodation, transport and other tourism related services and infrastructure necessary to meet expected demand, while enhancing economic, social and environmental outcomes.

‘This will require an integrated approach across many sectors (e.g. transport, environment, agriculture, innovation, education, tourism) and levels of government (national, regional, local), with input and support from industry.

Investment will also be critical in managing this growing tourist flows in a sustainable manner.’
