Muscat – Two students from Dakhliyah have clinched top honours in the Environmental Graphics competition of Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME). Held on April 24 in Kuwait, the event coincided with Regional Environment Day celebrations and focused on ‘the effects of coral reef degradation on marine life and beaches’.
Maryam Ali al Riyamiyah from Aisha al Riyamiyah School secured first place with her painting depicting the harmful impact of pesticides on marine environments. “The idea for this submission stemmed from the detrimental impact of pesticides on the seabed and its inhabitants,” Maryam informed.

She won third place in the same competition last year. “That motivated me to strive for first place this year and elevate the reputation of Oman in this international competition.”
Nasiba Nasser al Shamakhi, also from Aisha Al Riyamiyah School, received ROPME’s Executive Secretary Award. Her 30cm x 40cm painting was completed in seven days under the supervision of the school’s fine arts teachers. “I dedicated a full week to perfect my artwork, ensuring precision in colour usage and alignment with the competition’s theme,” Nasiba said.

Both girls are thankful for the support they received, which contributed to their success, and hope to continue competing and excelling in future environmental competitions both domestically and internationally.
