Muscat – The Foreign Ministry of Oman has expressed its regret at the failure of the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution granting Palestine its rightful membership of the United Nations.

The United States vetoed a draft resolution on Thursday at the UNSC, which recommended granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations. Twelve countries voted in favour of the resolution, which was introduced by Algeria, while the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained.

The Foreign Ministry described it as a move that clearly contradicts the international consensus on granting the Palestinian people their right to self-determination and hinders efforts to establish and promote justice and peace worldwide.

In an official statement, the ministry made clear that the Sultanate of Oman calls on all members of the Security Council to give full and fair attention to the Palestinian cause, and to apply fair standards to everyone without exception. ‘This should include respecting international law and United Nations resolutions to ensure the establishment and sustainability of the principles of security, stability and peace both in the region and the world at large.’
