Muscat – Over 260,000 people visited the Oman Botanic Garden pavilion at the Doha Expo 2023 horticulture exhibition in Qatar, which is running till March 28 under the theme Green Desert, Better Environment.

It is the first ‘Expo for Horticulture’ to be organised in the dry desert climate of the Middle East and North Africa region with the aim of promoting sustainable innovations and combating desertification.

In a statement, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism said, ‘On Wednesday, Oman marked the conclusion of its participation in the expo, where the Oman Botanic Garden pavilion showcased 1,600 trees and plants, attracting over 264,438 visitors.’

Experts from Oman Botanic Garden presented a series of lectures, including one titled ‘Plant Heritage: Traditional Uses of Omani Plants and Conservation Efforts’ delivered by Saif al Hatmi, Senior Plant Specialist. He discussed the garden’s efforts in preserving Omani plant heritage. 

Dr Abdullah al Husni, Senior Horticulturist, delivered a lecture titled ‘Mediterranean Climate, Desert Environment: Ecotourism in the Green Mountain, Opportunities and Aspirations’, outlining opportunities to make Oman a leading destination offering an authentic and unique eco-tourism experience. 

In another presentation titled ‘Biological Control for Protecting Local Plants’, Asmaa al Jaradiya, Plant Protection Specialist, spoke on sustainable and environmentally safe pest control methods implemented at Oman Botanic Garden to protect plants from pests and diseases.

The Omani pavilion highlighted significant projects, innovations and scientific experiments at Oman Botanic Garden. The garden played a prominent role at the expo, representing an important sustainable project showcasing the richness and diversity of Omani nature through its unique plant species.

Trees and plants displayed in the pavilion will be returned to the garden at the end of the expo.
