Muscat – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has renewed the Unesco Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation for the next six years, following a positive evaluation process.

The announcement was made during the 219th session of the Executive Council of Unesco being held in Paris till March 27, with participation of the Permanent Delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to Unesco.

The evaluation report highlighted the alignment of the award with Unesco’s tasks and competencies, particularly emphasising its role in implementing the organisation’s medium-term strategy for 2022-2029 focused on building sustainable societies and environmental protection.

The prize recognises outstanding contributions of individuals and institutions in the field of environmental conservation, aligning with Unesco’s Science Sector programmes and priorities as well as the objectives of the Unesco Man and the Biosphere Programme.

It also reflects the commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, particularly those related to environmental sustainability, biodiversity and addressing climate change.

Notably, the award’s significance extends to its consistency with international treaties such as the Paris Agreement on climate change and other agreements aimed at environmental protection.

As global awareness of environmental challenges continues to grow, the Unesco Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation plays a crucial role in highlighting efforts towards achieving global sustainability and promoting actions that contribute to the preservation of the environment for future generations.
