2 Mar 2024 Oman welcomes meeting of Palestinian factions in Moscow

Muscat – The sultanate’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed a meeting of Palestinian factions held in Moscow on Thursday and Friday.

Representatives of Palestinian political factions, including Hamas and Fatah, met to discuss the formation of a unified Palestinian government amid Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 30,000 people.

Palestinian factions, some of which have been at odds for almost two decades, discussed forming a new government just days after the Palestinian Authority government resigned.

The objective of the two-day talks was to unite the factions under the Palestine Liberation Organization, a coalition of parties that signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1993, and form a new government in the Palestinian Authority, Hussein Hamayel, spokesperson for Fatah, told CNN.

In an official statement, Oman’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the positive statement issued at the end of the meeting and stressed the importance of building on the momentum to form a Palestinian national consensus government.

The statement said such a government would guarantee the comprehensive representation of all factions in a way that meets the aspirations of the Palestinian people at this critical juncture.

“We welcome this meeting of all Palestinian factions in Moscow and applaud their efforts to reach a national consensus,” H E Sayyid Badr al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, posted on X.

Jasem Mohamed al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of GCC, also welcomed the statement issued by the Palestinian factions. “The outcomes of the meeting are a positive start to begin unified political action, confirming the aspirations of the Palestinian people.”

Oman condemns Israeli attack

Oman’s Foreign Ministry condemned and strongly denounced a brutal attack in which the Israeli occupation forces targeted unarmed Palestinian citizens who were waiting to receive aid in northern Gaza on Thursday. It resulted in the deaths of over a hundred Gazans.

In an official statement, the ministry pointed out that these systematic criminal acts by the occupation forces are a clear violation of all international and humanitarian norms and laws.
