Kenya, Nairobi – Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Environment Authority, has been elected president of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).
The announcement was made at the conclusion of the sixth session of the assembly in Nairobi. Among the most important decisions taken at the meeting were nominations for the positions of president, vice-president and members of the UNEA Bureau.
Amri’s selection as president of the session reflects the international community’s confidence in Oman’s pioneering work towards protecting the environment and preserving its natural resources, and its position in support of international efforts aimed at preserving the environment.
UNEA is one of the most important international associations and the highest body in the UN concerned with environmental affairs.
It has an active role in protecting ecosystems and biodiversity, combating desertification, supporting the green and circular economy, and reducing pollution. Its decisions also have an important role in shaping the environmental future.
The UNEA president is the face of the assembly and its main communicator. The president is the guardian of the rules of procedure, and functions as the moral authority of the assembly. UNEA mandates the president to convene all formal plenary meetings, including working groups on resolutions clusters.
