Muscat – The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD), in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman, has unveiled two mobile rehabilitation units dedicated to serving people with disabilities in Al Wusta.

The units were launched under the auspices of Sheikh Mohammed bin Ali al Ghufaili, Wali of Haima, on Monday, marking a significant step forward in the sultanate’s efforts to enhance accessibility to rehabilitation services.

Introduction of the mobile units in the wilayats of Haima and Al Jazar aims to benefit 80 individuals, with plans underway to extend similar services to the wilayat of Mazyunah in Dhofar.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy of MoSD to ensure rehabilitation services reach all corners of the country, facilitating the integration of people with disabilities into society.

The mobile units are designed to offer a comprehensive range of services, including special education, occupational therapy, natural therapy, as well as behavioural and psychological rehabilitation. Additionally, these provide speech and language therapy, vocational training programmes, and a variety of cultural, sports and recreational activities, aiming to empower individuals with disabilities.

An official of MoSD informed that the units have trained staff, including a special education specialist, a physical and occupational therapist and four speech/language specialists, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation.

According to data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there were 44,513 individuals with disabilities in the sultanate at the end of 2022, accounting for 0.9% of the total population underscoring the growing need for robust rehabilitation services.

According to NCSI data, 66 individuals were enrolled in programmes at the Vocational Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre, which plays a crucial role in facilitating their integration into society.

Launch of the mobile rehabilitation units reflects Oman’s commitment to supporting people with disabilities, ensuring they have access to essential services that encourage their participation and inclusion in all aspects of life.
