Muscat – Omani director Mohammed al Darwish bagged the second place at the Ghafa International Film Festival for Environment and Climate held in Musandam for his documentary film Beta-carotene.

The festival took place from January 14 to 17 and saw the participation of several countries from the region, including Iran, Iraq and the UAE.

The film, an ode to Oman’s water bodies, passionately advocates for the preservation of natural resources.

Darwish also won the award for best cinematography for another documentary, titled A Man from Jabal Qahwan, which tells the story of life in the mountains, showcasing the intimate relation between man and nature.

A Man from Jabal Qahwan is about a man whose family resides in cities, but he stays back in the mountains.

Using a wide range of cameras and sophisticated editing techniques with Adobe Premiere and After Effects, Darwish crafted visual narratives that transcend borders. Besides showcasing Omani landscapes, his films delve on universal themes, resonating with audiences worldwide.

Speaking about the awards, he said, “I am thrilled to take Oman to the global stage with my films. Each award represents a collective achievement of the sultanate’s burgeoning film industry, showcasing the depth of creativity and storytelling that Oman has to offer on international platforms.”
