Muscat – The two-day long Municipal Councils Symposium in the sultanate’s capital Muscat ended on Monday with a number of recommendations for the better performance of the civic councils so that they can contribute in a more effective way to the country’s transition to the next stage of development.
The symposium recommended the implementation of provisions of the Municipal Councils Law and the integration of efforts of the municipal councils, government departments and the private sector establishments.
The recommendations were made keeping in mind the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to empower the civic councils so that they could better carry out their developmental and social roles.
The closing ceremony – held under the auspices of H E Sayyid Hamoud Faisal al Busaidi, Minister of the Interior – highlighted the significance of municipal councils’ awareness about the updates brought about by Oman Vision 2040.
It focused on linking the councils’ legally defined functions with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. In this context, special emphasis was laid on devising annual plans to secure sustained high performance.
The symposium called for espousing clear-cut criteria to measure the performance of the municipal councils, bearing in mind the demographic and geographical differences between the governorates.
The symposium also suggested a review of the formation of municipal affairs committees in the wilayats to offer better opportunities to study their developmental needs.
A session titled ‘Media Aspects of Municipal Councils’ was held on the closing day of the symposium.
In addition, a panel discussion was held on the means of integrating the roles of municipal councils’ members with the roles of the governors.
The inaugural day saw the launch of an electronic app ‘Tanmia’ – developed by the Ministry of Interior – that has been designed as a digital interface and a meeting platform for the municipal councils and members of the public.
The symposium was attended by several Royal family members, ministers and other senior government officials and governors.
