Muscat – The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) has launched a campaign called ‘Begging stops with you’ in its efforts to combat the social evil of begging.
MoSD has warned people against engaging in any kind of begging activities – both individual and organised.
An official at MoSD said, “Beggars create fictional stories and present situations to gain sympathy. Awareness of their methods will protect you from exploitation.”
He explained that beggars make up stories that make generous people emotional and dole out money for help.
“Organised begging is conducted by individuals, gangs or organised groups that force children or people with disabilities to beg.”
Talking about MoSD’s efforts, he said, “The ministry coordinates with government agencies, including the Ministry of Labour, Royal Oman Police and the Public Prosecution to combat begging.”
The ‘Begging stops with you’ campaign seeks to educate the public about the perils of begging, urging them to report cases immediately.
“Begging also leads to an increase in criminal activities, disruption in social norms and affects the country’s reputation in terms of tourism,” the MoSD official added.
The ministry seeks public cooperation to combat begging and urges all to report incidents via dedicated hotlines – 1555 or 9999.
