GCC calls for immediate end to Israeli aggression

Muscat – The sultanate, represented by the Foreign Ministry, has announced its full support for the Palestinian cause. A statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said, ‘On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Sultanate of Oman affirms its firm support for the justice of the Palestinian cause.’

In 1977, the UN General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (Resolution 32/40 B). On that day in 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine.

The Palestinian flag was hoisted at the city hall of the Norwegian capital on Wednesday morning in a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza to mark the day.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Mayor of Oslo Anne Lindboe called for peace in the Middle East particularly at a time fraught with tension.
“When we know that more than 5,000 children have lost their lives (in Gaza), the equivalent of more than 275 school classes, it is only natural to remember them today,” she said.

“It is very important to highlight that Oslo should be a city for everyone, where both our small Jewish minority and those with a Palestinian background should feel safe, seen and included,” she added.

GCC calls for immediate end to Israeli aggression

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries presented a unified stand, demanding an immediate end to the Israeli occupation forces’ aggression in the Gaza Strip at the United Nations General Assembly discussion on ‘The Question of Palestine’ on Tuesday.

The statement, delivered by First Secretary Khalid bin Saleh al Rabkhi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations, emphasised the rejection of aggression as self-defence by Israel.

The GCC states commended Security Council Resolution 2712, issued on November 15, 2023, which calls for a mandatory ceasefire. They also supported the General Assembly’s resolution from an emergency special session held on October 27, 2023, demanding an immediate ceasefire and access to aid. The GCC insists on unconditional implementation of these decisions and vehemently opposes any actions aimed at forcibly displacing Palestinians from their land.

The humanitarian truce agreement, mediated jointly by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, and concluded between Israel and Hamas, was welcomed by the GCC countries.

They condemned in the strongest terms the ongoing Israeli crimes against Palestinians, including the use of internationally prohibited weapons, urging the international community to hold Israel accountable for these violations of international humanitarian law.

The GCC also denounced any attempts to annex settlements in the West Bank to Israel. Additionally, the statement condemned the repeated incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque’s courtyards by Israeli settlers under the protection of Israeli forces.
