Omani athletes bag 14 medals at world taekwondo meet

Muscat – Oman’s taekwondo team put up an impressive performance at the G1 International Taekwondo Open Championship in Sarajevo, Bosnia, clinching five gold, four silver and five bronze medals.

The championship hosted 350 participants from 28 nations. Oman’s contingent of 22 athletes stood out, securing commendable victories against strong opponents.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hafez al Balushi, Director of Professional Academy in Ibri, said, “The determination and prowess of our athletes were evident as they fiercely competed and emerged triumphant. They added to Oman’s illustrious track record in international taekwondo and held our nation’s flag high on the podium.”

Among the gold medalists were Dawood al Yousfi in the 148cm height category, Al Mundhir al Balushi in 160cm, Al Mu’tasim al Maskari in 172cm, Abdulrahman al Jabri in the 55kg weight category and Nbaras al Touqi in 51kg.

The silver medalists were Muhannad al Balushi in the 45kg category, Fahad al Zadjali in 48kg, Mohammed al Balushi in 51kg and Mohammed al Hajri in 73kg.

Bronze medals were claimed by Yusuf al Zadjali in the 156cm category, Al Az al Maouli in 168cm, Fida al Burwani in 164cm, Dania al Abdulali in 152cm and Amima al Hinai in the 46kg category.

Reflecting on the event, Professional Academy’s Balushi said that while the championship posed numerous challenges, the team’s dedication and rigorous training paid off. “Academies like us need financial support as participating in international championships is crucial. It gives the required exposure to players.”

Balushi informed that the team’s focus now shifts to the upcoming 3rd Qatar International Taekwondo Open G1, scheduled from October 21 to 23.
