Muscat – The average daily waste received during the Eid al Adha holiday exceeded 8,000 tonnes, a 31% increase compared to regular days. This led Environmental Services Holding Company – be’ah – to make elaborate plans to collect and dispose large quantities of waste during the holiday, from June 27 to July 1, totalling more than 39,000 tonnes.

Khamis Marhoon al Siyabi, Executive Vice-President of Municipal Waste Operations at be’ah, emphasised the company’s strategic plan implemented in collaboration with waste management service providers across various governorates.

“This plan aimed to effectively manage the expected surge in municipal solid waste and slaughter waste during the Eid holiday. Specific locations, known as skip locations, were allocated for the collection of slaughter waste, taking into account population density and accessibility for citizens.”

To prioritise public health and safety, be’ah increased waste collection frequency throughout all governorates and ensured the daily and continuous transportation of slaughter waste to engineered landfills during the Eid holiday.

Siyabi informed that be’ah extended the working hours of transfer stations and landfills to support waste collection operations across Oman.

According to Mohammed Ahmed al Mamari, Senior Regional Operations Manager for Batinah, Musandam, Dhahirah and Buraimi governorates at be’ah, the company distributed over 305 additional containers dedicated solely to the collection of sacrificial waste during Eid al Adha.

Notably, the waste collected during the holiday reached significant amounts, including 6,837 tonnes in North Batinah, 6,175 tonnes in South Batinah, 279 tonnes in Musandam, 2,390 tonnes in Dhahirah and 984 tonnes in Buraimi. “These figures highlight the necessity of concerted efforts needed to handle the substantial increase in waste production during this festive period.”
