RO18,000-prize money OMQ Film Awards invites entries

1 Jul 2023 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Organisers of the OMQ Film Awards are inviting makers of short films to register for the second edition of the event. Offering prize money of RO18,000, the awards aim to elevate the Omani film industry and inspire aspiring filmmakers to showcase their talent.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and OQ Company, and organised by OMQ Productions, the awards are committed to nurturing young Omani filmmakers and fostering a vibrant filmmaking culture in the country.

In an interview with Muscat Daily, Khalid al Abri, owner of OMQ Productions, said, “We encourage Omani youth to participate in the awards.”

Considering the success of the inaugural edition in 2020, which saw the participation of 42 Omani films, Abri anticipates a bigger response this year with over 50 films expected to compete.

“The awards’ primary objectives are to support Omani youth, stoke passion for filmmaking, and encourage production of local films for regional and international competitions,” Abri informed.

The awards were established in memory of three talented photographers – Mohammed al Nahdi, Ahmed al Abadi and Oman al Adawi – who tragically lost their lives in an accident.

The prize money – RO18,000 in all – will be awarded to winning films, actors, actresses, directors and production staff in different categories.

“The competition is open to all types of films – feature, documentary, 3D and animation. However, only Omani filmmakers can compete.”

Abri further informed that films produced after January 25, 2022, can participate. Entries must be of two- to 15-minute duration. Films previously submitted for other competitions in Oman, screened for public viewing or shared on social media platforms will not be accepted.

“Films should be submitted in their final cut, with two versions – one with cast and credits and another without. Additionally, films can be in any language, provided there are Arabic subtitles if it’s not in Arabic.”

Filmmakers have until July 16, 2023, to submit their entries through the official website https://award.omqpro.com/
