Lensman captures bustling Eid habta in Nizwa using drone

25 Jun 2023 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Habtas, the traditional markets integral to Eid al Adha celebrations particularly the purchase of livestock, are drawing large crowds in governorates across the country. Photographer Majid al Amri seized the opportunity to document this vibrant socio-economic and cultural event using a drone, freezing moments of the colourful habta in Nizwa, Dakhliyah.

In an interview with Muscat Daily, Amri shared his experience of the drone shoot. “The habta in Nizwa saw a big rush on Friday as customers sought the best deals before Eid al Adha.”

Amri has been photographing Eid habtas for 12 years, aiming to document Omani traditions and promote cultural awareness. However, this was the first time he employed a drone.

“I found time this year to plan my trip and capture some incredible moments of people enjoying the traditional market. Using the drone, I was able to showcase the size and scale of the event.”

The habta in Nizwa is a customary fair held every Friday and during Eid adjacent to Nizwa Souq. According to Amri, the market attracts a diverse range of participants, including citizens, residents, tourists, and breeders with their livestock.

“Days before Eid al Adha, the habta comes alive, offering all the essentials for the religious holiday. It is an opportunity to purchase Omani breeds of sheep and cattle. But customers can purchase cattle from other countries too. The market also features the traditional auction – called Al Munadah – where livestock are sold to the highest bidder.”

Besides livestock, the habta offers a variety of items – toys, halwa, fruits, vegetables and clothes.

Amri is passionate about photographing nature and people, but emphasised that capturing habtas and sharing these images on social media has become an annual tradition in time for Eid.
