Muscat – The Ministry of Labour (MoL) has announced the midday break for workers, banning work at construction sites and open areas from 12.30pm to 3.30pm in June, July and August. This is to protect workers from intense summer heat.
A statement issued by MoL said, ‘The break is in accordance with Article 16-3 of the Labour Law, which states that workers cannot work at construction sites or open areas under high temperatures during midday in the months of June, July and August. Inspection at work sites will be intensified to ensure establishments enforce the midday break. Companies that violate the ban are liable to penalties.’
Urging companies to abide by its decision, MoL stated that fines for violating the ban range from RO100 to RO500 or, in some cases, a jail term of up to one month. Penalties can be doubled for repeat violations.
