Muscat – Royal Oman Police (ROP) has arrested a driver for endangering his own and the lives of others on a public road in Dhahirah.
A statement issued by ROP said, ‘Dhahirah Governorate Police Command arrested a driver for endangering his life and the death of a passenger in his vehicle when it overturned in a drifting accident. Legal procedures are being completed against the driver by the Directorate General of Traffic.’
In February, ROP released a video of a drifting accident in which two people were seriously injured by a citizen in North Batinah.
Experts and racing drivers have time and again called for tougher penalties in the sultanate for such offences. Speaking to Muscat Daily, Ali al Barwani, former CEO of Oman Road Safety Association, described the practice as “widespread” despite efforts exerted by ROP and several campaigns to spread awareness on the risks involved. “I believe harsher punishment will limit these activities and prevent tragic accidents.”
According to racing driver Ali al Balushi, Oman Automobile Association has a dedicated track with safety and security standards for drifting and organises championships throughout the year.
“There are a few who do not adhere to the safety standards and engage in drifting in public places, which causes fatal accidents. I urge the Omani youth to visit Oman Automobile Association, learn about its programmes and competitions, participate in these and abide by traffic laws.”
ROP called on all to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and make all roads safe for users.
