Muscat – Muscat Municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, will organise Muscat Nights Padel Tennis Tournament starting May 5.

In a statement, Muscat Municipality said that the tournament will be held in male and female categories at Oman Automobile Association till May 7. Registration fee for teams is RO25 and the registration deadline is Tuesday.

The top three winning teams will receive cash prizes and medals.
Padel is a racket sport that is always played in doubles on an enclosed court. It is much like a cross between tennis and squash where the ball can bounce off the glass wall or metal mesh that surrounds the court.

Usually played outdoors, padel was invented in Mexico in 1969 by Enrique Corcuera when he modified his squash court to incorporate elements of platform tennis.

In the 1970s, a Spanish friend of Corcuera took the sport to Spain where it is now considered one of the most popular sports in the country. Other countries where padel is a hit include Mexico, Argentina, the UK and the US.

According to the International Padel Federation, the sport is played in more than 90 countries around the world.
