Muscat – The Radiotherapy Department of Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC) has launched a new treatment facility for patients with intractable abdominal cavity tumours for the first time using PIPAC technique.
In PIPAC – Pressurised Intra Peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy – anti-cancer drugs are administered inside the abdomen using a surgical endoscope, resulting in direct and focused treatment of cancer cells in the abdominal cavity.
The technique helps reduce tumours, treat advanced cases of cancer, and improve patient response to treatment in complicated cases.
SQCCCRC’s surgery team confirmed that the new technique has been effective in treating a number of patients at the centre. Following promising results, and the team is looking forward to expanding the treatment facility to include the maximum number of patients possible.
The centre was set up on the Royal Orders of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Construction began in March 2017 and operations commenced in July 2021.
