Muscat – To ensure the safety of products and to preserve the health of consumers, Muscat Municipality has issued guidelines for consumers while shopping.
‘Muscat Municipality urges consumers to follow guidelines while shopping, including reading food labels, checking date of packaging and expiry, and choosing fruits and vegetables with desired quality like the colour, texture and nutritional value,’ a statement said.
It further advised shoppers to pick up frozen and chilled foods towards the end of shopping, and get it home as quickly as possible. ‘Avoid poorly sealed canned foods that have swelling or warping, discoloured labels, and damaged pull ring or can opening pin.’
The municipality also urged shoppers not to buy fruits and vegetables from street vendors, and discouraged purchase of large quantities in excess of one’s needs. ‘Never forget to wash fruits and vegetables before cooking or consumption.’
Scaling up inspection visits around the city during Ramadan, the municipality conducted surprise visits to 45 shops and restaurants that were providing iftar food and buffet services in the wilayat of Bausher.
Inspection teams issued two health violation warnings and destroyed 15kg of unfit food.
