Oman sends 97 trucks of food aid to Yemen

27 Mar 2023 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – The sultanate, represented by Oman Charitable Organization (OCO), has sent food aid to Al Mahra in Yemen to provide iftar meals for fasting people in solidarity during the month of Ramadan.

A statement issued by OCO said, ‘The aid is part of a programme to organise aid for Yemen. The aid convoy consists of 97 trucks loaded with supplies, including 26,400 food parcels with iftar meals.’

Oman has been at the forefront, politically as well as on the ground, to provide all kinds of assistance to the people of Yemen.

The eight-year conflict has devastated the country and left thousands dead or maimed for life. In Salalah, the Arabian Prosthetics Centre is providing a healing touch and restoring hope among those who have been crippled.

The centre has so far helped over 900 Yemenis injured in war get back on their feet.

In 2020, Oman was the hub of the World Food Programme (WFP) for air shipments directed to Yemen in response to the COVID-19 emergency.

“WFP transported items such as PPE, hand sanitiser, oxygen cylinders, ventilators and emergency medical supplies to Yemen from Oman on behalf of the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Population Fund, the Unicef, the WHO and Oxfam,” a WFP spokesperson told Muscat Daily.

Port of Salalah too has been a facilitator, being the gateway to Yemen. In November 2022, it partnered with global shipping giant Maersk to launch a new multimodal transport solution to Al Mazyunah Free Zone.

The new service reduces lead time and allows access to multiple markets, helping Yemeni importers save costs and transit time. It also aims to support the growth of SMEs in Oman and Yemen and attract new investors.

Over 35,000 vouchers for Oman

OCO has distributed over 35,000 vouchers among needy families in Oman since the beginning of Ramadan this year. It is giving vouchers worth RO30 for purchase of foodstuffs for iftar to needy families.

According to OCO, more than a thousand families benefit from its iftar meals annually. More than RO700,000 has been raised through the donate.om portal from 34,919 donors this year for different charitable activities.

It called for donations for its Ramadan Iftar Programme through Bank Muscat (0331010930310021), Bank Dhofar (01040609090001), NBO (1049337798005) or www.donate.om
