Muscat – Motor racing enthusiasts can look forward to a weekend of exciting drag races being held officially in the sultanate for the first time on February 24 and 25.

The Oman Drag Race Challenge is being organised by Oman Automobile Association in cooperation with Supercars Majlis, a group of enthusiasts who own supercars.

Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hamed Muslem al Nazouani, one of the race supervisors, said, “The race will be held on the runway of Ras al Hadd Airport in Sur, targeting about 300 contestants from GCC countries. The runway length is 4km, with a width of 75m, making it an ideal spot for the sport.”

He informed that organisers have obtained approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to hold the race. “Races will be held in four categories – SUVs, sedans, supercars and motorbikes.”

According to Nazouani, prize money totalling RO5,000 will be won by winners.

He added, “The race aims to promote tourism in South Sharqiyah, motivate young people to participate in motor sports, and spread the importance of following traffic rules in motors sports.”

The two-day event will include several activities, such as paragliding and folk performances. “Stalls will be allocated to productive families to present their ware in order to promote and support them.”

Nazouani added, “We will try to hold the race annually to continue to promote the sultanate and attract motor sports enthusiasts from around the world.”
