First nationwide marathon to kick off in Nizwa

Muscat – The first nationwide marathon will kick off on Friday in Nizwa, Dakhliyah.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MCSY), in partnership with Oman Broadband, SABCO Sports and Qatari Aspire Zone Foundation, the marathons will be held in all governorates of the sultanate, except Muscat, and include 10km, 6km and 2km races for all age groups.

Saud Ambusaidy, Assistant Director General of Sports Activities at MCSY, said, “This event aims to develop sports activities in Oman and create a suitable environment for runners of all ages. We expect the marathon to attract a large number of participants. Organisation of the marathon is in line with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to build a healthy society and ensure ‘Health is everyone’s responsibility’.”

Following Nizwa, the marathon will take place in Mudhaibi, North Sharqiyah on February 18, followed by Sohar, North Batinah on February 25, Buraimi on March 11 and Rustaq, South Batinah on March 18.

The marathon will continue in Salalah, Dhofar on August 5, Ibri, Dhahirah on October 21, Sur, South Sharqiyah on November 4 and Duqm, Al Wusta on November 17.

The last leg of the marathon will be held on December 30 in Khasab, Musandam.
