Sohar Fort received 3,000 visitors during National Day holiday

Muscat – A total of 3, 902 people visited Sohar Fort from November 30 to December 3, according to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT).

Built in the 1st century AD, Sohar Fort is perched atop a hill and has five towers. In its vicinity are two parks – the Silver Jubilee Park and Sohar Park, which are ideal for people to unwind or take a break from the hectic pace of life in the city.

A statement issued by MHT said, ‘As many as 3,902 people visited the historic Sohar Fort coinciding with the 52nd Glorious National Day holiday period from November 30 to December 3, 2022. Of the total, Omanis accounted for 88 per cent of the visitors.’

Historical sites in Oman recorded a significant increase in visitor numbers – 22,259 in 2020 compared to 7,064 in 2016, a growth of 215 per cent – according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

Available data shows that the governorates of North Batinah and Dakhliyah have the highest number of castles and forts.

According to NCSI data, Nizwa in Dakhliyah received the largest number of visitors in 2020.

The Nizwa Fort received 143,767 visitors in 2019 and 44,047 in 2020. Muttrah Fort received 14,781 visitors in 2020, Taqah 4,457, Mirbat 691, Khasab 10,429, Bukha 6,367, Buraimi 1,068, Bahla 11,304, Jibreen 19,977 and Sansilah Fort 1,395.
