Muscat – Oman has distinguished itself as a peacemaker and mediator making it a role model of peaceful co-existence, emancipator of women and youths’ rights champion, according to the head of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the global organisation of national parliaments.
Duarte Pacheco, President of IPU, who is visiting the sultanate, welcomed Oman’s efforts to pave the way for a permanent ceasefire in Yemen.
“A word of gratitude to Omani authorities for everything done in peace process to achieve a ceasefire in Yemen. Oman’s role is important and ‘thank you’ is not enough for trying to put an end to the Yemen war, going on for seven years,” he said.
He valued the tireless efforts undertaken by Oman to enhance security and stability in the region, which are respected by all international institutions and organisations.
Pacheco said that Oman and the IPU might have different ways of promoting cooperation, but they serve a common goal. “For instance, Oman has experience in promoting dialogue and cooperation among countries. We don’t always think the same about everything. We need each other. With dialogue it is possible to resolve any issue to go forward and this is where Oman plays a role,” Pacheco said.
On IPU’s cooperation with Oman, he said, “There is strong cooperation with Oman’s Majlis A’Shura, which has been supportive of IPU.”
One of the oldest multilateral organisations in the world, it was established in 1889.
