Omani inventor honoured with doctorate for road safety device

24 Oct 2022 By

Muscat – Omani inventor Ali Salim Ali al Busaidi has been awarded an honourary doctorate by the Kingdom of Morocco Union of Inventors for inventing an emergency device to speed up response time during traffic accidents called Musif.

Busaidi was also recently awarded the World Cup 2022 for Invention and Scientific Research, which was held in Tunisia in September as part of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8).

In 2021, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) granted a patent for his device.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Busaidi said, “This certificate is motivation for me to exert more efforts to make innovative products and help advancement in scientific research in Oman and the Arab world.”
He added that Musif aims to reduce the number of victims of traffic accidents, and speed up response time through rapid communication with emergency teams in the sultanate.

“It will also allow automated and accurate reception of accident information, reducing human error in determining accident locations, and enhancing coordination with emergency services required to assist in such events.”

Musif works by sending a text message automatically from a vehicle to emergency services, in case of an accident, as well as to a close relative to keep them informed. “The message also contains a location link, allowing emergency services to quickly reach the site of the accident,” said Busaidi.
Busaidi faced many challenges in creating the device, but he persevered to work hard and was finally able to create a working model.

“A number of tests have been conducted for Musif in collaboration with international companies in Canada that specialise in manufacturing car safety systems, so that the device can be converted into a commercial product sold locally and overseas.”

About the way forward, he informed that he has established a small company to manufacture the device. “A few oil and gas companies in Oman used my device on their cars to support me. I will start actual production of the device in the middle of 2023.”

Advising Omani inventors, he said, “Develop your own innovative ideas, and register your concepts with the intellectual property department in MoCIIP to protect these from infringement.”
