Pioneering prostate surgery using holmium laser performed in Oman

Muscat – A team of doctors at Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre has performed the first minimally invasive procedure for an enlarged prostate using a holmium laser in Oman.

According to Dr Hilal al Rashdi, urology oncology consultant, Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) treatment provides a lasting solution for an enlarged prostate. It is similar to open prostate surgery but requires no incision. “In the HoLEP procedure, we use a laser to remove tissue that is blocking urine flow through the prostate.”

HoLEP is an advanced technique, which can offer faster recovery of less than 24 hours instead of seven days in the case of traditional prostate surgery. It reduces risk of bleeding after the operation, especially for patients who use blood-thinning drugs, and reduces the need of a catheter tube from five days to 24 hours.

“HoLEP also helps in preserving the removed tissue so that it can be examined in the laboratory for other conditions, including prostate cancer,” Rashdi added.

He informed that holmium laser is used to treat various conditions, including prostatectomy, lithotripsy in the bladder, ureter and kidneys, and treating ureteral strictures, in addition to the removal of tumours from the bladder and urinary tract.
