Documentation of wild trees continues in Dakhliyah

10 Aug 2022

Nizwa – The Environment Authority, represented by the Environment Department of Dakhliyah Governorate, has started the second phase of a project to inventory and document perennial wild trees in the wilayats of Nizwa, Jabal Akhdar and Manah.

The project aims to identify the perennial tree species in the governorate and their geographical distribution. Data related to the circumference of trunk, height and general condition of the trees are fed into a geographic information system for future reference.

The project also aims to educate all segments of society and visitors on the importance of preserving perennial wild trees.

The third phase will include installation of number plates on some trees in order to enhance knowledge and awareness of the importance of these trees, EA stated.

The project began in April this year and will gradually cover all the governorates.

In January 2020, Environment Authority in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman, launched an initiative to plant 10mn wild tree saplings in the next ten years. Some of the indigenous tree species included in the initiative are ghaf, al samar and sidr for which nurseries are being set up.

Under the initiative, the departments of EA in all governorates distribute seedlings of Omani wild trees among organisations and individuals in order to increase the area of vegetation cover and combat desertification.
