Omani scientists develop Alzheimer’s diagnosis programme

18 Jul 2022 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – An Omani research team has developed a smart programme that helps diagnose and determine the degree of severity of Alzheimer’s with the use of artificial intelligence.

Researcher Salma Sulaiman al Hinai said, “The team applied Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to help patients who suffer from the disease, which leads to exacerbated nervous disorder, waste-away (atrophy) and death of brain cells – the most common manifestations of dementia.”

The research project has been funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation to help provide practical solutions for the health sector, limit the scope of the disease and ameliorate patient conditions, Salma said.

Through up-to-date resonance imaging, the research team determines the extent to which brain tissues are affected. The programme reveals cells’ neuronal death and saves the time and efforts of radiologists.

The programme helps measure the volume of the three fragmented tissues of brain – white matter, grey matter and cerebrospinal fluid – helping in diagnosing if a patient has Alzheimer’s or not.
