Muscat – Four students of University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Shinas have developed a drone to sanitise public places.

Mohammed Abdullah al Muqbali, Mazen bin Rashid al Badi, Samah Marhoon al Maktoumi and Sumaya Fahd al Maamari, students of electrical engineering, have made use of drone technology to disinfect public areas in a short time.

“The idea behind the project is to disinfect public places efficiently to protect people from direct contact with unclean surfaces. The technology helps sanitise public spaces more quickly than manual means,” Sumaya said.

She informed that the programme can be automated by specifying points on a map, which results in saving time. “The objective of our project is to keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution in line with Oman Vision 2040.”

The programme took two months to develop, from assembly, installation to finally execution. The team is currently working on developing drone technology for other tasks, including transportation of goods and survey of residential areas to facilitate planning and development of modern cities.
