Oman’s position on Russia-Ukraine strife ‘balanced’

Muscat – H E Sayyid Badr Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, held a session of official talks with Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, on Wednesday.

The two sides reviewed the cooperation relations between the two countries, affirming the keenness of both sides on developing these in all spheres to serve joint interests.

H E Sayyid Badr said that Oman is following with great interest the situation in Ukraine and called on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences peacefully in order to avoid aggravation of the situation. “The sultanate supports all international efforts, especially the efforts of the United Nations, which aim to enhance security and stability in the region.”

Lavrov described Oman’s position on the Russian-Ukrainian strife as ‘balanced’, adding that he discussed with the Omani side the latest developments of Russian operations in Ukraine and their geopolitical dimension.

On the regional front, Lavrov spoke of Russia’s deep belief in the importance of activating negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to reach a comprehensive solution for the historical issue. On the crisis in Syria, he said, “We appreciate the role of Oman in the Syrian issue. We believe that the time has come for Syria to return to the Arab League, and we believe that Oman is able to contribute effectively in this matter.”

Bilateral relations

The two sides discussed furthering economic relations between the two countries and agreed on expanding a package of bilateral agreements.

These include the mutual exemption of visas for citizens of the two countries, and a cooperation agreement between the Russian Museum and the National Museum of Oman.

“We seek to strengthen trade cooperation between Oman and the Russian Federation in order to raise the volume of exchange to meet the aspirations of both sides,” said Lavrov.

Additionally, H E Sayyid Badr affirmed Oman’s commitment to the existing agreements with the OPEC Plus group.

The two underlined the importance of dialogue and cooperation for diplomatic solutions for various issues, as well as supporting all efforts that aim at maintaining regional and international security, stability and peace.

The session was attended by Khalid Hashel al Musalhi, Head of the Minister’s Office Department, several officials of the Foreign Ministry, H E Morgunov Ilya, Russian Ambassador to Oman, and members of the delegation accompanying the guest.
