Muscat – The total number of registered vehicles (excluding military vehicles) in the sultanate decreased by 0.3 per cent from 1,557,453 in 2020 to 1,552,665 in 2021, according to the latest data released by the National Centre for Information and Statistics (NCSI).

Commercial vehicles registered the biggest drop in numbers from 239,639 in 2020 to 232,985 in 2021. The number of government vehicles decreased from 12,695 in 2020 to 12,206 in 2021.

Private vehicle registrations accounted for 79.4 per cent of the total number of registered vehicles, increasing by 11,807 vehicles to 1,233,109 compared to 1,221,302 vehicles in 2020.
Driving school vehicles increased from 5,730 in 2020 to 5,842 in 2021.

A total of 833,155 lightweight vehicles of engine capacity 1,500cc to 3,000cc were registered in 2021.
White was the most preferred colour for vehicles (665,975), followed by silver (199,428) and gray (128,189).

Vehicles with temporary registration (temporary inspection, export and import) dropped by 50.2 per cent in 2021 to 7,645 compared to 15,351 registered in 2020.
