Sayyid Badr conveys HM’s greetings to Assad
Damascus, Syria – H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, arrived in Damascus on Monday morning heading an official delegation.
Dr Fayssal Mikdad, Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister, while receiving H E Sayyid Badr, said, “The relations between our two brotherly countries has continued uninterrupted. The brotherly sultanate has stood by Syria in its war against terrorism.”
SANA, the Syrian state-controlled news agency, quoted H E Sayyid Badr as saying, “I am very happy to visit Syria with which we have strategic relations, and we aspire to hold talks and consultations to further consolidate bilateral relations and the Arab cooperation.”
In response to a question, H E Sayyid Badr said, “All the Arab brothers are looking forward to meeting with Syria and for the return of Arab unity.”
Oman, along with Egypt and several other Arab states, has been moving in the direction supporting Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Foreign Minister, on his recent visit to Oman, spoke about Egypt’s ongoing efforts to communicate with Arab countries to facilitate Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Speaking at a press conference alongside H E Sayyid Badr in Muscat on January 23, Shoukry said, “We hope that conditions will be available for Syria to return to the Arab domain and become an element supporting Arab national security. We will continue to communicate with Arab countries to achieve this purpose.”
Speaking on the subject in an interview last week with Andrew Parasiliti for Al-Monitor, a US news website providing reporting and analysis from and about the Middle East, H E Sayyid Badr said that Oman was among the very few states that maintained its relationship with Syria, even though Syria was no longer in the Arab League as its membership was frozen, “because we always believe that there needs to be some channel of dialogue and engagement with Syria”.
“Syria is a founding member of the Arab League. Bringing it back to the fold is becoming increasingly a concept that ought to be embraced because we can help that country in finding a solution to the problems, by engagement and inclusivity, not by isolation.
“We have seen over the years that we have hardly managed to achieve any progress by isolating Syria and the Syrian regime. I think engagement is probably more promising to bringing about a solution to the crisis in Syria. In encouraging them to reconciliate with all the other parties on the Syrian scene, to find and to forge a Syrian solution to that problem, and forge a future for that important country in the Arab League,” H E Sayyid Badr said.
