Muscat – Yanqul Sports Club, in coordination with Sport Zone, will organise a 12km race on January 14 in Yanqul, Dhahirah governorate. Called Yanqul Challenge 2022, the race is being held to promote tourism and a culture of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle.
Yanqul Sports Club is affiliated to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, while Sport Zone specialises in conducting a wide range of sports events.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Suleiman Said al Alawi of Sport Zone, said, “The race will start at 7am from Yanqul Sports Club. Running over different terrain – flat ground as well as inclined surfaces in mountains – the route passes through several historical sites, castles, picturesque farmland and a wadi.”
Known for its natural beauty, heritage buildings and other tourist landmarks, Yanqul is about 240km from Muscat.
The word ‘yanqul’ translates to ‘connection’ – the wilayat connects three governorates. Located in the eastern part of Dhahirah governorate, it overlooks Buraimi and North Batinah.
“Contestants can camp in Yanqul. The club will allow participants and their families to use the club’s facilities, which are enclosed in a big walled area to provide privacy. There are toilets, showers and the club has very kindly agreed to provide dinner the night before the race,” Alawi informed.
Urging Omani youth and residents to participate, he said more than 100 contestants are expected to register.
