FIFA Arab Cup 2021
Doha, Qatar – Oman conceded a 1-0 advantage as Iraq equalised with a penalty goal in the dying moments of their FIFA Arab Cup 2021 opening fixture at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar on Tuesday evening.
Oman too scored through a penalty in the 78th minute when midfielder Salaah al Yahyaei shot past the Iraqi custodian Fahad Talib.
Coach Branko Ivankovic’s men fought hard to hold on to the lead against the fancied Iraqi team, the most successful team in the competition with four titles.
However, following an infringement in front of their own goal, Oman conceded a penalty only to see Hasan Abdulkareem scoring for Iraq in the 90th minute.
In the opening match of the tournament earlier Tunisia drubbed Mauritania 5-1.
In their other Group A fixtures Oman will next meet Qatar on Friday (Dec 3) before taking on Bahrain on December 6.
