New dams in Dhahira to help revitalise aflaj, fight drought

Ibri – Work for the construction of two groundwater recharge dams in the Governorate of Dhahira started recently, according to an official.

The dams are being built to store run-off water from mountains and utilise it to fight drought in Yanqul and Dhank wilayats.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, preliminary construction work has started at Falaj al Sederiyeen Dam in Yanqul, while preparations have started for the construction of Wadi Suroor Dam in Dhank. Both the dams will feed aflaj and wells in the two wilayats, the ministry said.

Eng Salem bin Ali al Amrani, Director General of Agriculture and Water Resources in Dhahirah Governorate, said that initial works for an approach road and other arterial thoroughfares have started for the Falaj al Sederiyeen Dam.

This dam will be 95m in length and 15m in height with a 35m long spillway to offer a storage capacity of 240,000m3. The length of the Wadi Suroor Dam will be 165m and height, 15m. The length of the spillway will be 10.5m, with 1.29mn m3 capacity.

Amrani asserted that the ministry attaches great attention to the conservation of water.
