Muscat – A group of students from the Mechanical Engineering Department of University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Sohar is preparing a detailed study for the design and construction of water turbines to produce electrical energy in cooperation with Majis Industrial Services Company and Sohar Port Company.

The project aims to exploit the run-off water in the cooling drainage channel in Sohar Port to produce electrical energy in an economically viable manner.

Dr Mohammed bin Saif al Sa’eedi, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department and project supervisor, said, “This project aims to engage young graduates in ambitious projects that contribute to sustainable development, and to realise the university’s vision derived from the goals set in Oman Vision 2040.”

Project design, initial engineering drawings and techno-economic feasibility study will be completed by the end of the current semester.

“Prototyping and pilot operations will be completed by the end of the next semester, and the project will be evaluated by academics in the specialty and technicians from the industrial sector,” Sa’eedi informed.
